### What Are Mainland China and Hong Kong Netizens' Opinions on New Apple, Huawei, and Samsung Phones?
In late July, Samsung released its new generation of foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip 5. On August 29th, Huawei launched the Mate 60 Pro, and Apple followed with the release of the iPhone 15 series on September 13th. We examined the data to understand the attention and discussion directions of netizens in Hong Kong and Mainland China regarding the Apple iPhone 15, Huawei Mate 60 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. Apple iPhone 15 and Huawei Mate 60 Pro Top the Charts in Online Discussions in Mainland China and Hong Kong
Comparing the discussion volumes of these new phones during the study period, we found that in Mainland China, Apple iPhone 15 was the most discussed, with a post volume reaching 120,000, 4.8 times that of the second-ranked Huawei Mate 60 Pro (24,000 posts). Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip 5 had only a few hundred posts. In Hong Kong, the situation was slightly different, with Huawei Mate 60 Pro being the most discussed, followed by Apple iPhone 15, with a difference of only 2,000 posts. Samsung's foldable phones were the least discussed.
iPhone 15 Discussion Focus Comparison: Mainland Netizens Focus on Battery Capacity, Hong Kong Netizens on Processor
We categorized the discussion focus into nine categories: battery capacity, appearance, operating system, memory, price, camera, screen, processor, and satellite phone. Analysis of big data revealed that Mainland netizens discussed battery capacity the most, accounting for 20.2% of the total discussion, followed by price (18.9%) and appearance (15.4%). In Hong Kong, netizens focused more on the processor (18%), followed by price (17.8%) and appearance (15.7%). Battery capacity was ranked fourth.
A close look at the hot word analysis in both regions shows that "Huawei" was mentioned the most in iPhone 15 discussions, mainly due to the competition between the two brands in the Mainland China market. In sentiment analysis, discussions in both regions tended to be neutral.
Huawei's Processor Attracts the Most Attention from Netizens in Both Mainland China and Hong Kong
We further analyzed the discussion focus for the Mate 60 Pro. Mainland netizens were most concerned with the processor (26.4%), price (18.7%), and battery capacity (11.2%). In Hong Kong, netizens were also most concerned with the processor, with a post volume share of 59.3%, followed by the operating system (12.2%) and price (10.2%).
The word cloud shows that "chip" appeared most frequently in Mainland China's network data (22,186 times), while in Hong Kong, the most mentioned hot words were "chip" (10,389 times) and "Kirin" (7,722 times).
Sentiment Analysis of Mate 60 Pro Discussions in Both Regions
Mainland netizens' discussions about the Mate 60 Pro tended to be more positive (46%), mainly due to Huawei's new breakthroughs in 5G chips, while Hong Kong netizens' discussions were more neutral (44.3%).
Battery Capacity is the Most Discussed Topic for Samsung's New Phones Among Mainland Netizens, While Hong Kong Netizens Focus More on Price
The online discussions about Samsung's foldable phones, Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip 5, differ significantly between Mainland China and Hong Kong. Our analysis shows that Mainland netizens discussed battery capacity (16%), screen (16%), and price (14.8%) the most. In Hong Kong, netizens were most concerned with price (25.4%), appearance (17.1%), and camera (13.5%). Promotions by major telecom providers and Samsung's new hinge design that improved user experience sparked considerable discussion among Hong Kong netizens.
