In 2023, Hong Kong's online world witnessed another wave of trends. Google recently released the Hong Kong 2023 Search Rankings, reviewing the past year's most searched keywords. The results showed that "Abby Choi," "JPEX," and Typhoon "Koinu" were the most searched terms. So, what were the most discussed and concerned topics on social media in Hong Kong in 2023?

Using the social intelligence platform xMiner, uMax Data analyzed posts on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, various forums, and YouTube in 2023. Through analyzing the most popular posts, we identified the most concerned topics and trending keywords, and calculated the social media interaction index (heat value) these topics generated.

Analysis of Popular Topics Throughout the Year

uMax Data compiled the top 100 posts by heat value in 2023 and found that the "Abby Choi Dismemberment Case" garnered the highest attention on social media (49.5%). This was followed by "Mainland-Hong Kong Border Reopening" (14.4%) and "JPEX" (14.4%). Other topics such as the "Diamond Hill Hollywood Plaza Knife Attack" and "Hong Kong Night Vibes" also received considerable attention.

The following is an analysis of the top 3 popular topics:

1. "Abby Choi Dismemberment Case"

The occurrence of the "Abby Choi Dismemberment Case" attracted netizens' attention, who analyzed the timeline and suspicious points of the event, causing the discussion volume to peak on February 27.

After the incident, many netizens analyzed Abby Choi's birth chart and destiny. Some netizens believed that Choi's birth chart indicated a "Seven Killings Luck Cycle."

2. "Mainland-Hong Kong Border Reopening"

Regarding the "Mainland-Hong Kong Border Reopening" topic, the Hong Kong government relaxed anti-epidemic measures on January 10, allowing limited border reopening, followed by a full reopening on February 6. This topic drew significant attention from netizens, who discussed the requirements for border crossing and strategies for doing so.

The "JPEX" case is the largest virtual asset platform fraud case in recent years, with 2,623 victims reporting losses amounting to HKD 1.6 billion. The platform gained many users due to promotion by several internet KOLs and celebrities, such as Lam Chok, Chan Yee, Julian Cheung, and Jacquelin Chong. On September 18, KOLs Lam Chok and Chan Yee were taken by the police for investigation, which drew significant attention from netizens and pushed the discussion to its peak.

Netizens focused on the actions taken by regulatory authorities like the SFC and the police, including the arrest of KOLs, responsible parties, and the whereabouts of the funds. The fraud case has gradually eroded public confidence in virtual assets and Web3.
