【Octopus going cardless, will netizens accept it?】

Octopus announced yesterday (July 11) that it will support iPhone and Apple Watch within this year, allowing Apple users to directly use Octopus via Apple Pay on their devices. But what are netizens' opinions on this? uMax Data uses thisas a case study to demonstrate how social media listening can identify potential PR crises early, detect public opinion risks, and prevent them from escalating into PR disasters.

1) Sentiment Analysis (情感分析)  identifies friendly and negative media.

uMax Data utilized its self-developed AI-powered social listening platform, HK Pulse, to analyze the online public opinion trends on July 11. By observing three types of media—news, Facebook, and forums—and applying AI sentiment analysis technology, it was found that discussions on Facebook were more active and responses were generally more positive. Forum discussions ranked second in activity; however, negative sentiments accounted for more than half of the overall responses, indicating dissatisfaction among forum users towards the new measures.

2) Sentiment Analysis x Word Cloud to Examine Comments

Analysts further delve into social media comments to showcase the focal points of discussions through word clouds (Word Cloud). It was found that positive responses often regard the cardless approach as a way to make life more convenient. The most mentioned words by users include "convenient," "open," and "direct," with a significant number of discussions also centered around "time."

Additionally, some have pointed out that Apple devices in other regions have long been implementing cardless solutions, mentioning places such as "Japan," "Mainland China," and "Europe and America." Many comments highlighted that various mobile payment methods have emerged in recent years, supporting the cardless approach of Octopus, directly calling this decision an "opportunity" and even praising the company for being "progressive."

Regarding negative feedback, most people are concerned that linking Octopus to their phones may lead to data leakage, with the most discussed keywords being "personal" and "data."

Some also believe that cardless transactions could lead to personal whereabouts being recorded, raising suspicions of "conspiracy," "surveillance," and "record-keeping."
Some people also do not agree with cardless systems, mentioning the term "physical."
