[2022 Policy Address] Netizens Most Concerned About "Housing," Followed by "Talent Attraction"

On October 19, 2022, Chief Executive John Lee delivered his first Policy Address, sparking heated discussions among the media and netizens. Among the various topics, which one garnered the most attention?

Using the social listening platform HK Pulse, uMax Data analyzed over 10,000 data points from major social media platforms and online news between 11 AM and 5 PM on October 19, following the Policy Address. Here are the key insights.

1. Housing Discussions Peaked Immediately After the Official Announcement

We identified and analyzed five major topics from the Policy Address using the HK Pulse social listening platform. From 11 AM to 5 PM on October 19, housing emerged as the most discussed topic (37.0%), particularly the "Light Public Housing" initiative. This was followed by "Talent Attraction" (23.2%) and "Financial Development" (19.0%).

The five key areas we selected include housing, talent attraction, financial development, government governance, and infrastructure. Here are some of the key measures for each area:

The number of replies for all five topics declined over time, dropping to less than a quarter of the initial volume three hours after the speech began.

Using the HK Pulse social listening platform, we identified the most popular posts on housing topics. The post with the most replies focused on the "Light Public Housing" initiative proposed in the Policy Address. Some netizens questioned the concept of "Light Public Housing," wondering if it was equivalent to subdivided flats or container homes. Others believed that the supply of "Light Public Housing" would still be insufficient to meet the housing needs of Hong Kong residents, doubting its ability to reduce waiting times.
