【iBond Anti-Inflation】Brokerage and Bank Battle for Customers

2021-06-11Buzz

The latest issue of iBond closed for subscription today. Amid this year's economic downturn, iBond, as an inflation-resistant bond product, continues to attract considerable investment interest despite offering a fixed return of only 2%. It has also become a customer acquisition tool for banks and securities firms.

uMax Data collected public sentiment data on iBond from May to June 10 this year to gauge online opinions. Both securities firms and banks rolled out various promotions to attract users during this iBond subscription campaign. The data shows that while their online presence was nearly equal in volume, securities firms generated nearly 50% higher engagement than banks.

From a discussion perspective, most conversations related to securities firms revolved around "promotions," with many offering incentives such as new account perks, including free IPO shares and profit vouchers. Although banks also provided benefits like waived transaction fees, these discussions garnered less attention. At the bank level, discussions often revolve around "returns" and "subscription and selling methods." The former primarily analyzes the comparison of returns between I-Bonds and other investment products, while the latter focuses on whether subscriptions and sales can be conducted online.

Several financial institutions have launched promotions to attract customers, ranked by their online presence.

Among banks, Bank of China (BOC) has the highest visibility, accounting for approximately 25% of the total. This is not only because BOC mentioned in media interviews that the subscription amount through electronic channels has increased compared to the previous batch of iBonds, but also due to financial influencers promoting BOC as the bank offering the most benefits.

As for securities firms, Futu Bull and Huasheng Securities are performing equally well. In addition to waiving subscription fees, both firms attract new clients by offering free stocks. Several financial Facebook pages have recommended their followers to subscribe through these two brokerages to maximize their benefits. —————
