Global warming ranks only second in Hong Kong's environmental issues.

Global warming ranks only second in Hong Kong's environmental issues.

2020-11-12Buzz

This past Saturday was the warmest Start of Winter in 136 years, drawing attention to the issue of climate change, while "plastic-free living" has become a rising environmental topic in recent years.

uMax Data utilizes big data for social listening, analyzing environmental discussions throughout the entire month of October. We found that Hong Kong netizens' attention to environmental issues extends beyond local policies, with more people focusing on the topic of "pollution."

First place: Pollution issues - Plastic reduction, waste charging

Through social listening, we discovered that among various environmental issues, the prominence of "climate" and "pollution and waste" is the most notable, reflecting that these two topics are the most effective in driving online interactions, including comments, shares, and likes.

"Pollution and waste" accounts for nearly half (47%) of the overall popularity value, indicating that discussions on plastic reduction and garbage charges are of most concern to netizens.

Second place: Climate - Global warming, renewable energy
The discussion on "climate" accounts for over 35% of the total, with most people talking about topics related to global warming and renewable energy.

On the other hand, topics previously widely discussed under "urban planning," such as wall-effect buildings and the Lantau Tomorrow project, were found to have significantly less discussion in this big data analysis compared to the aforementioned issues, making up less than 10% and not being a hot topic in October. As for "animal" topics, they had the lowest popularity value at only 8.2%, reflecting that animal-related environmental issues struggled to generate a response over the past month.

Local issues are more hotly debated than international ones.

Even though they are all environmental organizations, the backgrounds and philosophies of the groups differ. There are numerous environmental organizations in Hong Kong, each with its own positioning. This time, we selected three global organizations and two local organizations, attempting to analyze their differences in promoting issues across various regions using big data.

Overall, the average engagement level for local issues is higher than that for international issues, indicating that local environmental problems are more likely to elicit responses and shares from netizens. However, the situation varies among individual organizations.

  • Greenpeace and Green Earth: Garner the most attention when addressing international environmental issues, including problems such as global warming and ocean pollution;
  • Friends of the Earth, Green Sense, and the World Wide Fund for Nature: Attracting more discussions on local issues such as Lantau Tomorrow, country parks, and local species.

This finding suggests that the background and nature of the organization have little influence on the issues it advocates; the decisive factors may be promotional methods, media exposure, etc.
