【To Prevent the Epidemic, Dine-in Prohibited】
✦ First day of a full-day ban on dine-in services: Netizens express widespread "misery"✦
July 29 marked the first day of the full-day dining ban, and prior to that day, Facebook reactions were predominantly "angry." However, on the 29th, the count of "sad" reactions suddenly surged, reaching the week's peak for all types of reactions. On the day the measure was implemented, many media outlets captured photos of citizens dining, with numerous images showing people squatting on streets to eat, prompting netizens to react with "sad." Meanwhile, "angry" reactions ranked second but still remained higher than other reactions, indicating that the public generally held a negative sentiment toward the measure.
The government announced on the morning of the 30th that restrictions would be eased on Friday. Judging from Facebook reactions, although the number of "sad" reactions dropped significantly on the same day, the "angry" reactions did not decrease but instead increased, suggesting that the dissatisfaction among netizens could not be alleviated. Additionally, the "haha" reactions also rose, reflecting that more netizens were responding with mockery.
✦ Different camps discuss the lockdown order most; the non-establishment camp focuses more on the cancellation of exemptions.✦
In response to dissatisfaction with the government's handling of the pandemic, netizens frequently mentioned other epidemic prevention measures while discussing the ban on dining in.
In discussions across different political camps, the "stay-at-home order" is the most prominent topic, with related mentions reaching as high as 67.8% among the pro-establishment camp. Some netizens pointed out that solely implementing a ban on dine-in services is impractical; it should be complemented with measures like stay-at-home orders to effectively reduce the number of people commuting to work and going out. At the same time, there are opinions suggesting that if people cannot endure a ban on dine-in services, a full-scale stay-at-home order might have to be enforced, which would be even less convenient.
Secondly, over 20% of voices from different camps believe that the government should provide assistance to eateries to compensate for the losses caused by the ban on dine-in services.
Regarding the discussion on "canceling quarantine exemption arrangements," the proportion of discussions among the non-establishment camp is significantly higher than that of the establishment camp, reaching nearly 20%. This reflects that there are more voices within the non-establishment camp who believe that the government's previous quarantine exemptions were overly lenient, leading to the outbreak of the third wave of the pandemic, and they hope the government will address these loopholes.
In addition, discussions about increasing testing are relatively low in proportion within both camps, with the proportion in the pro-establishment camp being slightly higher than that in the non-establishment camp by 2 percentage points.
In this analysis, we have also included Dr. Yuen Kwok-yung's suggestion of using takeaway meal boxes for dine-in to avoid cross-contamination through tableware contact. However, this suggestion has not been mentioned by any camp.
