Threads Garnered the Most Discussion on the Second Day After Launch, with Musk and Zuckerberg's Banter Drawing the Most Attention

During the study period, July 7 and July 8 had the highest post volumes, with 1,442 and 1,441 posts, respectively. However, the discussion heat on July 7 was significantly higher than the following day. This was mainly due to reports on the launch of Threads and the news circulating online about Twitter accusing Threads of copying. After Threads officially launched, online discussions began to increase, peaking at noon on the launch day, with the highest interaction volume coming from a post by Lin Rixi announcing the creation of a Threads account.
On July 8, the highest online interaction volume was driven by discussions about Keung To's late-night recording of his new song "12th Child" and his post on Threads. Related posts occupied the top three spots in terms of heat value, with two of the posts coming from the online media "囧報."
A closer look at the word cloud reveals that the most frequently mentioned words were "user" (9,396 times), "Musk" (4,766 times), and "Zuckerberg" (4,350 times). This was mainly related to the fact that Threads registered over 30 million users within a few days and the ongoing online banter between Twitter's owner, Elon Musk, and Meta's owner, Mark Zuckerberg.
Netizens' Attitudes Towards Threads Are Generally Neutral
uMax Data analyzed all online discussions in the database and found that netizens' attitudes towards Threads were generally neutral, with negative sentiments accounting for only 32.8%.
To gain a deeper understanding of netizens' concerns, we categorized the discussion focus into three categories: the launch and features of Threads, discussions related to Twitter and Meta owners, and celebrities/artists creating Threads accounts. We found that posts about the launch and features of Threads had the highest volume, accounting for 46.5%.
The online interaction between Zuckerberg and Musk also drew attention, accounting for about 32% of the discussions, mainly revolving around their banter on Twitter and the news circulating online about Twitter accusing Meta of stealing its trade secrets.
