uMax Data Team Attends Data Mining Workshop at CUHK's C-Center

Today, the uMax Data team attended a data mining workshop at the C-Center of the School of Journalism and Communication, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). The workshop was led by our Chief Consultant, Dr. Angus Cheong.

During the session, Dr. Cheong specifically pointed out common misconceptions in big data processing, particularly discussing the widely valued automated sentiment analysis. He emphasized that the positive or negative sentiment values should not be interpreted as public support. Dr. Cheong also advocated that relying solely on machine analysis is insufficient to generate insights; human judgment should be primary, with machines as an aid. Additionally, repeated data cleaning is necessary to extract meaningful and valuable deep analysis for accurate decision-making. These views were well-received by the scholars present.

The workshop explored how academia can apply big data to study public opinion and sentiment, and how to combine traditional academic logical thinking to handle the vast amount of sentiment data in the social network era. When discussing sampling, coding, and machine learning, the room immediately ignited with enthusiastic discussions. Professors and scholars engaged in heated debates and offered valuable suggestions on how to improve sampling methods to enhance precision. We are grateful for the invitation from the institution and have greatly benefited from the experience, returning with a wealth of knowledge.
